The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.
Ok, so this was part of yesterday's reading, but I was so puzzled by these verses that I just had to look them up in a commentary to try to make sense of it more. I found what this one commentary said was interesting and wanted to note it down. The commentary said that the master (and Jesus) commended the manger not for being dishonest, but for being clever and for looking into the future to make preparations. They related it to a robber who got thru a difficult security system. The news reporters admire that they were so smart to bypass it, but yet they weren't condoning the crime itself. So what this parable is really commending is that the manager was forward thinking and clever in thinking about how to deal with and build relationships that would help him when he needed it, versus "people of the light" or believers who do not do well in this area. I think what Jesus is saying is that we should be planning and preparing for the future too and be wise in the relationships we build so that we will be welcomed into heaven.
